Sonar. July 2000 - October 31 2010

From Anna
This  is  Sonar, I like't him but now he's dead. And im sad. I like't it wheen he was com. And he's loveuboul to. I relly relly miss him. Sonar was a good dog. He was varry helpful to us.We miss him a lot . I like't to play owtside with him. He is black as you can see.

From Carter
I really really miss him.

In no particular order...

Kevin named him for his big ears.

He had a favorite spot on the couch.

When Kevin was away I would let him sleep in the bed.

When it snowed he looked like he had dandruff. He used the snow as an excuse to just poop on the deck.

At night he always slept under the bed. Tassie learned this from him.

He had horrible teeth and would chew rawhide until his gums would bleed.

Anna would cover him with a blanket to make sure he was cozy.

Always that spot on the couch, unless he finally got squeezed out.

He didn't mind when the kids covered him up.

They were always loving on him in the morning.

He didn't mind.

Carter has always loved dogs.

When he was a young whipper snapper and my running buddy at our house in Prairie Village.

A big teddy bear, good for cuddling up for a nap.

He would run down our long hallway at our first house and jump over the foot of the bed. We joked he needed a cape.

Also good for warming cold toes.

Even early on Anna would try to give Sonar her food.

Driving by PetSmart one day I stopped and looked at the puppies. He was the last of his litter and there weren't any parents so I really wasn't sure what kind of dog he was or how big he would get. They had named him "Sweetie." Little did I know, that name really fit.

He rode on my lap as I drove out to my grandma's immediately after picking him up. He slept. It was Thanksgiving weekend and Kevin was out of town. Boy was he mad when he found out I adopted a dog without him. He was mine from the beginning.

He lived at the apartment with me in Lenexa. It was on the first floor and he liked to sit on the porch and watch the world go by. If he started to bark I hushed him, afraid the neighbors would complain. I think this is where he learned to "talk" without making any noise. If you've met him you know. He was snap his mouth but nothing would come out. He was talking to you.

Instead of buying him toys I would pick up pieces of his food and flick them across the kitchen floor. When he got older he would take one piece of food from his bowl into the other room and flip it around for a few minutes until he finally ate it and then went to eat his dinner. I think this was from playing with his food pieces as a puppy.

He would climb the fence in Prairie Village to chase the squirrels. He was my running buddy for a long time.

As he got older he liked to stay outside more. He had an invisible fence collar. Sometimes the battery would die and I wouldn't know it. He would go on an adventure. One time to the retirement community nearby where some old ladies were taking good care of him. Another time to Ryan's steakhouse nearby where someone found him in the parking lot.

He was always in the driveway when I would bring the kids home from school. He was always happy to see me. I was always annoyed that he was under foot as I was carrying in a million bags.

He would get into any trash can. I would have to put a chair upside down on top of it to keep him out. He loved kleenex, preferably used. When he got frustrated he would pee on the carpet upstairs. When I gated that he would pee on the carpet going downstairs.

He was my first "baby." He was 10 years old. I am glad he didn't suffer, but sad I didn't have more time to say goodbye or for the kids to say goodbye. I'm glad he was in my arms to close his eyes.

We love you Sonar. Peace be with you.

A Week in the Life - Wednesday

Alarm: 6:10. Up: 6:35. While I am in the shower Carter comes in and says he wants to watch cartoons. Then decides he needs to take his pull up off and put underwear on. While we are upstairs doing this Anna gets up. Carter puts his pajamas back on over his underwear instead of putting on the clothes I picked out. Whatever. They go downstairs and watch TV while I get ready.

They eat pancakes and head off to school. 8:00 am I head to a class on Hiring and Interviewing to learn some tips for hiring new associates at my job. One of my associates texts me that her baby is sick and she won't be in. Okay. 8:25 am Before I get to the class I get some Hazlenut coffee from Panera. 8:30 class. I don't learn anything new at the class.

10:30 am. Check email on iPhone. Realize there is a fire to put out at work already. Head to work. Get text from my brother who wants to go to lunch with Anna some time in the next week. I call him and chat about what day would work better. He says I have too much personal information on my blog. But it's cool he says.

Work was full of unanticipated problems or issues or opportunities or whatever you want to call them. It leads me to need two of these when I get home.

I didn't take any pictures during the day. In fact I didn't take any pictures until after dinner. I made a new stir fry recipe. I wouldn't make it again. It just leaves me with this mess.

After dinner I do more laundry.

Always with the laundry...

laundry to sort

laundry to put away

laundry to wash

laundry in the wash

The best thing about today is that is was a Merry Maids day. So I come home to a clean house. The only times all month the beds are made.

(note more clean laundry to sort)

Carter gets into the picture-taking and we find his camera that Santa brought for Christmas so he can snap some shots. He takes one of Kevin "Gotcha!" He takes one of me "That's a keeper!" He has me cracking up.

Then I find him flossing his own teeth.

Yes, you can count 7 toothbrushes in this picture. Why do we have 7 when we only have 2 kids? What can I say. We are REALLY passionate about brushing our teeth with all the cavities and crowns they have had.

Where are Kevin and the dogs in all of this? Their usual spots.

2 Down. 998 To Go.

After talking with a neighbor we heard we have voles. No, not moles, voles. We looked it up on You Tube and these are essentially just field mice. We watched a video of an exterminator setting traps. If you set one at a hole then you put the traps facing in around the hole, if you set one in a track then you put the traps facing out so they run right into it.

The guy in the video said a small garden could have 100 voles. We have over an acre so we must have thousands. Kevin said this gives him "something to do."

Kevin and Carter set the traps yesterday so today we went vole hunting to see if we caught anything.

We have field mice. Lots of them. Today is our first day catching voles in the yard.

If Sonar was a cat...

he could fit into the house Kevin built him.

Anna says...

So I DID manage to get all of those things on my list done, plus make the appetizer I remembered I had planned to take. I did get an extra hour though because Kevin didn't get off work until noon. We arrived around 4 pm at the same time as Kevin's brother-in-law and his wife. Today we had a delicious Thanksgiving dinner and then packed it back up and headed home. We got here around 7:30. Kind of a quick trip.

Tassie cut her paw on the farm but I think she is going to be ok. I think Sonar would have preferred to stay, although he did sleep on Anna's lap on the way back which was pretty cute.

On the way down we experienced this cute "Anna says"

Anna: Look a statue.
Me: That's a cemetary.
Anna: No, it's a statue patch. Like a flower patch.

I will forever call cemetaries statue patches. I thought this was so clever.

Really glad this is only a 3 day work week for me.

Wow, Way Behind

Ok, it's been way too long since I've posted an entry. I've been really busy working on the memory album for my grandparents. I hope to scan some of the pages and post them for you to see. In the meantime, here's what's good in my world.

The Grandview Triangle Project is finished. This means nothing to you if you aren't from KC, but if you are you know how life changing this event is. Something like three years (or more?) in the making.

It snowed but it's been too cold to play in it. This also delayed my ability to go shopping this weekend - a travesty. Will have to make up for it on Thursday this week.

And not-so-good in my world...

When it snows Sonar apparently thinks that the deck is the ground so he poops and pees right there on the deck. This means that today when everything was melting I got to clean up crap all over the deck. This was so that I could put Tassie on the deck so I could clean up all the puke in her area by the garage. I think she ate some of the insulation (since she ate through the sheetrock) and it made her sick. She hasn't fully tunnelled through to the garage but I suspect it's just a matter of time. This was all discovered when I got home from picking up Carter from daycare because he had explosive diarheaa.

I'm looking forward to the four Christmases we have planned. They start on Saturday and end on Christmas day.

Bad Dog

Well, bad things keep happening to me. This morning we lost Sonar, my dog. the one who eats toilet paper and kleenex but doesn't eat sheetrock. I've let the batteries die on the invisbile fence collar and he's been getting more and more adventurous. I've been finding him a few houses up or in the neighbor's garage but this morning we called and called for him and nothing.

We went ahead and went to the parade thinking he'd be on the deck or sun bathing in the driveway when we got back. Still missing.

It had been three hours. He had his tags on so I kept hoping someone would call saying they had found him. I decided we should go out driving to look for him... and to make sure he hadn't been hit by a car.

No luck. When we got back there was a message on the machine. He was at the thrift shop at the retirement community a little ways behind our subdivision. We headed up to pick him up. They were having a big furniture sale and said he'd been hanging out there all morning. They gave him water and had taken him inside. I think he was probably excited to have some attention.

With that dilemma solved we headed down to meet my friend Candi at the Plaza Art Fair. Anna had a lot of fun decorating a crown and painting a picture.

Then we had fun shopping at this adorable kids boutique.
