Quick Note

Just a quick note to say that we are having a blast with Anna and Brian. I am losing my voice for some reason, but other than that all is good.

We even got to have some girl time yesterday to get our nails done.

We are having more girl time today to go shopping on the plaza.

Kevin's parents arrive tomorrow so we will have a full house.

Ducks In A Row

Hello. Sorry for no posting lately. We are expecting company tomorrow night and I have been getting my ducks in a row.

Plus I'm going to Omaha and back for work tomorrow. That means I have to leave my house at 7am and hope to be back around 6pm. Brian and Anna arrive at the airport around 10:30pm. Not sure I will be able to stay awake until they get to our place, but I'll try!

So all of this also means I am not in the office this week after today. And work is crazy.

This all adds up to a somewhat stressed out Cara. Deep breaths. And Starbucks mornings. It will all be fun once I can stop thinking about work.

I have some contest entries due for our email marketing programs by the end of the week but I really don't want to be working while we have out of town visitors so I'm hoping to get these typed in the car up to Omaha and back tomorrow (I'm obviously not driving).

Wonder what kind of lunch they will take US to?!

Oh - and did I mention that Anna is suddenly 4 going on 14 with full-on attitude. Apparently I need to be meaner in my parenting. Or maybe more firm/direct is the correct phrase.

She's full of "You can't tell me what to do!" and "I don't have to answer you." and "I don't want to." She wants to be in control. By picking my big battles I have let her win too many little battles. Lesson learned.

Tooth Update

I took Anna to a pediatric dentist last Thursday. They cleaned her teeth and I was told I am supposed to be flossing her teeth every night and THEN the parent should brush her teeth. Oops. He said the cavity started between her teeth because we weren't flossing.

Then he said that he would actually put a silver crown/cap over that tooth instead of a filling because fillings can break in kids' teeth since their mouths are still changing. And they do not use gas.

So I have two completely different opinions from two different dentists. This dentist is going to be out of town for awhile so our appointment to have this fixed isn't until November. I might try to get one more opinion just to see.

Choo Choo

It's a good thing we have a dining room.

Excellent Anna Quotes

"Look! There's a flying carpet!"
(a plane with a really big sign flying behind - but it was hard to see the plane)

"Were they kissing with their tongues or just their lips?"
(watching reality tv with daddy)

"They're taking him to the spaceship."
(in awe watching the end of ET)

Lunch is Different in Japan

On Tuesday one of my clients came into town for some training. They had had some turnover internally and hired some new staff as well so we were training 3 new team members. They were younger and this was the first time we had met them. There were two guys and one girl.

As a break between trainings we took them to lunch. It was me (training them on the email marketing tool) my co-worker Lisa (training them on their website admin tool), Ben (their new contact from our team because Lisa is leaving) and Jeff (one of our officers AKA he was paying the bill).

We went to a Japanese steakhouse. I remember when we were deciding where to make a reservation last week Jeff wanted to go somewhere fun "but not Chuck E. Cheese."

The girl from our client had never been to a Japanese steakhouse. This was her first time.

It started out with the usual funny jokes. He was spinning the egg and dropped one. "Clean up on aisle four" he said in his i'm-not-so-sure-it-was-japanese accent.

Then he was making the fried rice, and there was a lot because all 7 of us ordered fried rice. "What shape should I make?" he asked Lisa. She suggested a normal shape, a heart.

"What about a penis?" he said. The girl from our client, sitting next to me said "did he just say what I think he said?" "I didn't say that" he quickly replied.

He then proceeded to put the rice in the shape of a torso. Then he filled two bowls with rice and turned them upside down to empty them as boobs. We giggled awkwardly. Then he cut off the tips of a lemon and put them on top of the boobies for nipples. THEN he took sesame seeds and poured them above what would be the cha-cha area.

Uh. Awkward. HELLO - I just met these people.

But he wasn't done!

Then he reshaped the huge pile of rice into a penis. He said it needed a "helmet" and made it so. He even had two balls and one was bigger than the other "It's natural, right ladies?"

OMG. Is this really happening? "Toby!" I said, which is our running joke around the office when something inappropriate happens at work because we don't have an HR person. The chef totally didn't understand. "Who's Toby?" he asked.

One of the guys said "Don't point that at me" so he tried to turn the penis but then it was just curved. Finally it was over and the rest of the food was prepared without any more sexual references.

All I could think for the rest of the day was

"I can't believe my rice was in the shape of a penis before I ate it."

And I can only imagine what that girl thought since it was her first time.

Park

We went to the park today with my friend Kim and her two boys. We had a great time! Then we went to lunch together. I think we were great birth control for the tables around us. Ha! Carter was asleep before we made it out of the parking lot.

First Trip to the Dentist

I had a dentist appointment yesterday and I had arranged for Anna to have her first appointment too. I wasn't sure how it would go. I think she probably should have started going a year ago. They looked in her mouth and counted all her teeth (20) and saw a cavity right away. They did not clean her teeth because she didn't want to and they didn't want to push it.

So now she gets to go back in a few weeks and get a filling. Right, that should be a great next experience. I'm very apprehensive about it. She isn't obviously because she has no idea. They are going to use "happy gas" but I have visions of her screaming and crying - like when she got her stitches.

First dentist appointment, first cavity. And I don't have dental insurance for her so it will be $250. Not that having dental insurance seems to be saving me ANY money. I pay $80 a month, or $960 a year, and a cleaning is only about $120 twice a year. AND I still have to pay a 20% copay, so that's another $50 or so a year for cleanings.

So if I paid $240 for two cleanings for me and $240 for two cleanings for Anna I would still have $480 left for fillings, x-rays, etc.

Totally cancelling my dental insurance. What a waste.

The Red Room - Kind of a Big Deal

Today was a very big day for Anna. It is the first full day in the red room at day care and she is officially moved to the red room for this school year.

The red room is the 4 year old room. This is kind of a big deal.

She was so excited to show me around her new room when I picked her up. She showed me the loft and the puppet stand underneath the loft. She showed me the globe and where she is going to live when she grows up (Africa). And she showed me her new cubby.

Then, in the bathtub tonight she told me that she isn't going to live in Africa because it would be too far to drive to go to a restaurant. When she gets married she is going to live in South Dakota because he (her husband) would want to shoot eagles.

Kevin hunts in South Dakota, that's where this comes from.

Too funny! She was in rare form tonight.

***********************************

The first thing the daycare workers said when I picked up Carter was that they LOVE his hair cut. Which is funny because my dad brought the clippers over on Saturday and we just trimmed around his ears and the back. I didn't think it was that noticeable but apparently I'm the only one who thought it was subtle.

He is 20 months old and this is his first haircut.

They all think "he looks like a little boy now." To which Kevin said "because he is."

Carter is talking a lot more this week, at least a lot more that I can understand. He got to bring a bouncy ball home from daycare and he kept walking around the house saying "Mine ball. Mine ball." because Tassie was following him around everywhere waiting for him to either drop or throw it.

Shop It Up

It is tax-free shopping on school-related items (clothes, school supplies, computers, etc.) this weekend in Missouri. Plus I had a 25% friends and family / Give and Get coupon to the Gap stores (BR, Gap, Old Navy). So Anna and I made a quick trip to Old Navy yesterday to get the kids jeans for this fall. We also scored some deals on tank tops for Anna for next summer ($2.50) and shorts for Carter for next summer ($6), plus some tank tops for me for now ($8).

If you don't have the friends and family discount of 25% you can use your Stuff and Save bag to save 20%. Stuff and Save is good throughout August. Don't have a stuff and save bag? Just ask them, they were handing them out in the store yesterday. If you have a Gap or BR or Old Navy card then you got one in the mail.

I also got a pair of shorts. Now, this is a milestone because I haven't worn shorts in years. But yesterday the heat index was over 110 and we were headed to the Royals game.

We lasted about an hour before we decided it would be better to watch the game in air conditioning. Plus we have tickets to two more games this week so it's not like we won't be there again soon.
